Head Coach – U14 Boys Competitive & U15 Boys Travel Recreational
About Coach Britt
Britt Hafner brings over 35 years of extensive soccer experience to New Haven Youth Soccer. His journey began at just 9 months old when his dad started to encourage him to kick the soccer ball. He entered the sport at just four years old in a program much like our Learn to Play. Over the years, Britt progressed through various levels of travel recreational soccer before making the jump to a top premier program at the age of 12 as a multi-positional player with a specialty focus as a defensive player. Even as a premier soccer player, Britt remained a multisport athlete playing basketball, baseball, and tennis.
Dedicated to soccer, he earned an Academy Contract Offer with Leeds United in England at age 13 as a left defensive back. Britt’s playing career also spanned Olympic Development Program (ODP) teams, JV and Varsity high school teams where he was heavily recruited by college programs. Due to injuries, Britt selected academics-focused Ohio Northern University, where he played intramural soccer while rehabbing. He later transitioned into coaching as an Assistant Coach for the Women’s Club soccer team at Ohio Northern University. Around the same time, he began giving back to his hometown community by volunteering as a coach across multiple sports with Dublin Youth Athletics in Dublin, Ohio.
After college, Britt’s passion for competing led him back to the field. He co-founded, coached, and played for his own co-ed team, Tony Hogan FC, which continues to thrive well past his retirement from active play, concluding a 26-year playing career. Britt joined the NHYS family in March 2025 with 9 years of coaching experience and is excited to continue coaching and helping players find or keep their passion for soccer.
Coaching Philosophy & Approach
Coach Britt’s approach to player development is rooted in fresh perspectives, technical excellence, and fostering a genuine love for the game.
  • Re-Evaluating Player Potential: Britt believes in continually re-assessing each player’s capabilities rather than assuming their current position is their permanent home. Recognizing that players undergo massive athletic and physical changes between U12 and U15, he actively helps players explore and discover where they can make the biggest impact. He does this by meeting the player where they are, whether they are experienced travel players or stepping into this level for the very first time.
  • Gamified & Engaging Practices: Keeping the game fun is Britt’s top priority. He designs dynamic practice sessions built around gamified drills and interactive exercises that keep energy high while reinforcing core skills.
  • Mechanics & Athletic Development: Britt works closely with players on the fundamentals that drive success. This includes teaching proper kicking mechanics for greater ball control, speed, and distance, alongside targeted exercises to improve core strength and agility. Britt emphasizes scaffolding player development throughout and across seasons. He works individually with player to help them identify what their goals are in soccer (whether thats just to have fun, transition into premier play, or make their high school team), and then develops indivdiualized development plans to help them meet their goals.
  • Game Intelligence & Communication: Britt focuses on teaching the strategy of soccer, from position dynamics and formations, reading the field during a game, adjusting to your opponents, and situational decision-making throughout a match. To ensure seamless teamwork, Britt provides a team glossary and formation overviews at the start of every season so everyone on the team communicates using a shared soccer vocabulary.
  • Sportsmanship & Character: Above all, sportsmanship is non-negotiable. Coach Britt instills a culture of mutual respect for teammates, referees, and opponents alike. Britt sets a positive example for how to interact with refs and opposing teams, holding his players accountable to that same standard. While emotions can run high during tight competitions, Britt treats every call, good or bad, as a learning opportunity. He emphasizes maintaining a level head, respecting the call, and playing a game that isn’t dependent on missed calls.
  • Playing Time: Britt believes that every player on the roster plays an active role. On Travel Recreational teams, Britt uses a 5-to-10-minute rolling substitution system to ensure equal playing time for everyone on the team. Every player has the opportunity to try out new positions, find their groove, and develop throughout the season. On Competitive level teams, the lineup decisions prioritize winning and giving players enough continuous field time to settle into the flow of the game and find a cohesive rhythm with their teammates. But even in competitive play, Britt works to keep playing time fair to support long-term player development and keep players healthy.

What I like to do for fun:
I enjoy painting, sketching, and appreciating art, and I’m classically trained at guitar, having played in a variety of bands over the past 27 years. When I’m not on the soccer field, you can usually find me cheering on Ohio State Football, Columbus Crew Soccer, or obsessing over my Cleveland teams: The Browns, Guardians, and Cavaliers.
Tip to Players
“For those looking to truly excel at this sport, learn and develop skills on your non-dominant foot too! Having a good touch or a strong shot from both feet sets you apart from the competition and gives you more opportunities on the field”.
